Traffic is the main source of noise in Oslo, and about one-fifth of the population are exposed to high levels of noise from road and rail traffic.

The City of Oslo is therefore mapping traffic noise and is seeking ways to reduce it. With this in mind, a number of areas in the city centre have been designated as quiet areas. These are areas where low noise levels are maintained or noise levels reduced.

The following indicators are used to measure noise and quiet areas.

Traffic noise

Sub goal ES.8.1 Statistics for noise from road and rail traffic over different periods, by district and for schools and hospitals where noise levels are high.

Quiet areas

Sub goal ES.8.2 Statistics for noise levels in quiet areas and proximity of Oslo’s inhabitants to quiet areas.
